@7IS THE ENTERPRISE A MILITARY SHIP?
==================================
@1Regarding my saying the Enterprise was not a military ship: I seem to
be unable to explain my emotive perceptions but I found this piece
of information which proves that I understand the spirit of Trek
better than you do! ;-)
It's the Internet FAQ file on StarTrek, in an endless list of drivel
and triva :) there is the point where they ask if starfleet is military
(must have argued about it on internet as well) the quote from the
a reputable source:
Quote:
According to ST:TNG Writer's/Director's guide (1987): "Starfleet is
NOT a military organization....No saluting. We may hear the word 'Sir,'
but it is intended as the same kind of courtesy used by junior and
senior officers on commercial airliners....
Per Jacobsen
THE CONSIDERED RESPONSE
Have you been reading my books? I don't think understanding the spirit of
Trek has anything to do with it.
Nonsense. A military organisation is not defined by the presence or
absence of salutes. Even if you defined it as a policing organisation
the Federation would still need a military capacity to deal with threats,
they don't have one because Starfleet is that military arm as evidenced
in the fight against the Borg and the blockade in 'Unification'. Why is
there a problem with this, any group in a situation which includes hostile
and aggressive neighbours needs a military arm, it does not in itself mean
that the *Federation* is aggressive and the important point is that
aggression isn't the aim and military activity is not under normal
circumstances the major occupation.
I think that the writers were having a bad attack of political correctness
and felt unhappy about describing Starfleet as 'military' but 'a rose
by any other name.......'.
